Alexa

Alexa Internet Inc. is a subsidiary company of Amazon.com.

Alexa provides information on traffic of websites and page views per visitor and sites' ranking relative to other sites. Some of the information is more accurate than others.

Alexa collects information via a toolbar that some visitors voluntarily install on their computers. It monitors which sites they visit and extrapolates from there the likely total traffic for that site.

It has often been slated for being very biased towards certain kinds of sites. For example, webmasters are more likely to be aware of and install the Alexa toolbar and, therefore, sites that get a lot of webmaster visitors tend to be better ranked in Alexa than they should be. Alexa has changed their algorithm several times to compensate for skews like this.

Alexa rankings have often been manipulated by lazy or dishonest webmasters to give the appearance that they are getting more traffic than they really are. In fact, there are several services online that offer to manipulate sites' Alexa rank for a fee.

So why bother with Alexa? As with any tool, it's about how you use it. A good Alexa rank isn't a basis to buy a site, and some may argue that it has no use at all. But our task is site valuation and we would be remiss in not considering the possibility that Alexa rank affects prices of sites. We are constantly monitoring for a relationship. Alexa also crawls the web like SE spiders and collects its own data that can sometimes provide useful insights.

Additional information that Alexa provides about sites includes user provided reviews, its own report of the site's backlinks and a "similar sites" feature.

Alexa rank plays a relatively insignificant part in the assessing of a site for purchase but in our valuation reports we are providing Alexa graphs and other information from the Alexa site and leaving it to readers to pursue further research.
