BacklinksBacklinks are the links to a site from other sites. You can conduct a link search in Google using link:sitename.com. Example. However, Google is reputed to not show all the links it knows about. Using Google webmaster tools one can get access to more accurate data but that's available only to the owner/webmaster of the site. Yahoo, Alexa and others provide the same ability to research back links. Yahoo Site Explorer allows you to search not just for the backlinks to a homepage but back links to the entire site (via the linkdomain: command). It also allows you to filter those results and show just links from external locations via the "Except from this site" drop down box. A note about YSE: When searching for links to http://mysite.com it won't show you links coming to http://www.mysite.com/ Here's a useful article on powerful ways to harness the Yahoo search tool for site and SEO research purposes.
